Master These Skills - To-Infinitive For Feeling And Purpose

Practice using to-infinitive.

You are already familiar with the following sentences.

I want a new car.

I want an ice cream.

He wants a good mark in his test.

Sometimes, you don't want a thing. You want an action. Use the to-infinitive in this case.

I want to play the piano.

I want to buy a new house.

He wants to watch a good movie.

"to play", "to buy", and "to watch" are the to-infinitives.

To-infinitive tells you what action you want, need, like, love, hate, choose, or decide. Here are some examples:

My cat loves to eat cat food.

The man needs to go to the toilet.

I decided to buy an expensive computer.

To-infinitive also tells you the purpose.

For example, read the following 2 sentences:

"I wash my hands." - This is what I do.

"I want to stay healthy." - This is the purpose.

You can combine these 2 sentences into 1 sentence:

"I wash my hands to stay healthy." "To stay healthy, I wash my hands."

You can also use these patterns: in order to, so as to.

"I wash my hands in order to stay healthy." "In order to stay healthy, I wash my hands."

"I wash my hands so as to stay healthy." "So as to stay healthy, I wash my hands."

The purpose can also be not wanting something. In this case, use in order not to and so as not to.

"I don't want to get sick." - This is also the purpose.

"I wash my hands in order not to get sick." "In order not to get sick, I wash my hands."

"I wash my hands so as not to get sick." "So as not to get sick, I wash my hands."
