Parent-Teacher Interview

(1) Dad: Listen
So, how did the meeting with the teacher go?
(2) Mom: Listen
Well, she said Josh has been [vocab word=act out]acting out[/vocab] in school lately. She asked me if there were any changes at home that could be contributing to his behavior.

In reported speech, we use an embedded question with "if" to ask a Yes-No question ("She asked me if there were..."). Also, we have to change simple present to simple past in the reported speech.

(3) Dad: Listen
What, really? Did she give any specific [vocab word=example]examples[/vocab]?
(4) Mom: Listen
She told me about a few incidents. The teacher told Josh to sit down during class, but he refused. She also asked him to stop [vocab word=disturb]disturbing[/vocab] other children, but he didn't listen.

The teacher told Josh: "Stop disturbing other children". To make this into a reported speech, you can say, "The teacher told Josh to stop disturbing other children."

(5) Dad: Listen
I certainly did not expect that kind of behavior from our son.
(6) Mom: Listen
She also told me that Josh would run off to the washroom in the [vocab word=middle]middle[/vocab] of the class and not come back for half an hour.
(7) Dad: Listen
Oh my…
(8) Mom: Listen
The teacher asked me what we were doing to correct [vocab word=such]such[/vocab] behavior at home. She also asked if we were [vocab word=aware]aware[/vocab] that Josh was acting this way.

We use an embedded question with 5W1H ("what we were doing to correct such behavior at home") if we want to put a 5W1H question into a reported speech. If we want to put a Yes-No question into a reported speech, we use an embedded question with "if" (if we were aware that Josh was acting this way").

(9) Dad: Listen
And what did you tell her?
(10) Mom: Listen
I told her that we hadn't noticed any [vocab word=drastic]drastic[/vocab] changes in his behavior at home. I told her we would talk to Josh about his behavior in school. She asked me to make sure that Josh understands the [vocab word=importance]importance[/vocab] of following rules at school.

Note that we change present perfect ("we haven't noticed any drastic changes") to past perfect ("we hadn't noticed any drastic changes") in a report speech.

(11) Dad: Listen
Did she recommend any [vocab word=strategy]strategies[/vocab] to improve his behavior?
(12) Mom: Listen
She recommended us to keep a close watch on Josh's activities and friends. She also asked us to meet the school [vocab word=counselor]counselor[/vocab]. The teacher told me to tell Josh that he needs to take [vocab word=responsibility]responsibility[/vocab] for his actions.

"She asked us to meet the school counselor" is another example of imperative sentence in a reported speech.

(13) Dad: Listen
We should have a family meeting and discuss about respecting others and taking responsibility for our actions.
(14) Mom: Listen
I think that's a good idea. The teacher made it clear not to [vocab word=let someone off the hook]let Josh off the hook[/vocab] for bad behavior, and I think we have to follow that advice.
