Bad Influence

(1) Trey: Listen
Did you watch the news? Mrs. Thompson's son was [vocab word=involve]involved[/vocab] in a [vocab word=robbery]robbery[/vocab].

To be "involved in something" means you are part of something. Maybe, you did something or someone did something to you.

(2) Sophia: Listen
Do you [vocab word=mean]mean[/vocab] Mark? Did someone [vocab word=rob]rob[/vocab] him? Or did he [vocab word=commit]commit[/vocab] robbery?

To commit robbery means you "do" robbery. You usually use the verb "commit" to means doing some bad things.

(3) Trey: Listen
Mark and his friends robbed a [vocab word=jewelry]jewelry[/vocab] store. They stole everything in the store, but the police caught them yesterday.
(4) Sophia: Listen
It's so surprising. That boy is a good kid. He is good at [vocab word=academics]academics[/vocab] and he is amazing at sports.

To be "good at" something means you can do something very well.

(5) Trey: Listen
I know.
(6) Sophia: Listen
He's interested in [vocab word=medicine]medicine[/vocab] and wants to be a doctor [vocab word=someday]someday[/vocab]. What happened?

We always say "interested in...", not "interested at..."

(7) Trey: Listen
He made some bad friends at the beginning of this year. He started to be involved in [vocab word=gang]gangs[/vocab].

To be "involved in" something means you become part of the something.

(8) Sophia: Listen
I see ...
(9) Trey: Listen
[vocab word=none]None[/vocab] of his friends were good at school or even interested in school. They were not good for Mark.

"None of his friends were good at school" means all his friends were not good at school (didn't study well).

(10) Sophia: Listen
They were a bad [vocab word=influence]influence[/vocab].

This means his friends were bad for Mark.

(11) Trey: Listen
Exactly. They asked him to help them rob a store. His friends stole jewelry from the store and he drove the getaway car.
(12) Sophia: Listen
What's going to happen to Mark?
(13) Trey: Listen
I don't know. His dad is a lawyer but he's not experienced in [vocab word=criminal]criminal[/vocab] [vocab word=case]cases[/vocab]. He's a real estate lawyer. He'll probably [vocab word=hire]hire[/vocab] a criminal lawyer to help his son.

His dad doesn't have experience in criminal cases. He has not done criminal cases.

(14) Sophia: Listen
It's too bad. You have to choose your friends carefully, I guess.
