Let's Talk About Retirement

(1) Ian: Listen
Fatima, can you believe we're both going to retire next year?

To "retire" means to not work any more, usually because you have a lot of money or because you are old.

(2) Fatima: Listen
Yes, Ian! It is a bit scary, but exciting at the same time. What are you going to do on your first day of retirement?
(3) Ian: Listen
I will probably wake up late and enjoy a nice breakfast with my wife. How about you?
(4) Fatima: Listen
I think I am going to spend the morning in my garden. I'll finally have the time to take care of my plants [vocab word=properly]properly[/vocab].
(5) Ian: Listen
At this time next year, we'll be having lunch [vocab word=without]without[/vocab] any work stress.

"We'll be having lunch without any work stress" is in future continuous tense.

(6) Fatima: Listen
That's true! I am going to miss these lunch breaks, though. Do you think you'll travel?
(7) Ian: Listen
Yes, my wife and I are planning a trip to Europe next summer. We will be exploring Italy, France, and Germany. I can't wait! What about you?
(8) Fatima: Listen
My husband and I are planning a Caribbean cruise. We will be [vocab word=lie]lying[/vocab] on the beach and enjoying the [vocab word=sunshine]sunshine[/vocab].

"Sunshine" is a compound noun (Sun + shine).

(9) Ian: Listen
That sounds amazing! Next year at this time, we'll be enjoying our [vocab word=retirement]retirement[/vocab] together with our families.

Ian is using future continuous because he's talking a continuous action, not just an action at 1 point in time.

(10) Fatima: Listen
Nice! Retirement will be a great time to try new hobbies and [vocab word=activity]activities[/vocab]. Are you planning on [vocab word=take up]taking up[/vocab] any new hobbies?

"Be planning on (verb-ing)" is a great way to talk about your future plan. "Taking up new hobbies" means to try new hobbies, to start them.

(11) Ian: Listen
I am going to take up painting. I've always wanted to learn, but I never had the time. And you, Fatima?

To "take up painting" means to start learning to paint.

(12) Fatima: Listen
I will start taking [vocab word=yoga]yoga[/vocab] classes and maybe learn a new language. I've always wanted to learn Spanish.
(13) Ian: Listen
We're going to have so much freedom next year.
(14) Fatima: Listen
Yeah. I'll miss working with you, but it's exciting to think about all the new experiences [vocab word=ahead]ahead[/vocab] of us.
