Personnel d'ALULA, Mis à jour le February 29, 2024

  • The present continuous tense can express current actions as well as future plans or intentions.
  • It is formed with the structure: Subject + be verb (am/is/are) + verb-ing (gerund).
  • To talk about future plans, we use the present continuous tense to describe what we intend to do.

The present continuous tense is not only for actions happening right now but also for talking about our future intentions or plans. This lesson will help you understand how to form sentences in the present continuous tense and use them to discuss what you plan to do in the future.

Forming the Present Continuous Tense

To form the present continuous tense, we need the present form of the verb "to be" (am/is/are) depending on the subject, followed by the gerund form of the main verb (the base verb + -ing).

Grammar Rule: Subject + be verb (am/is/are) + verb-ing (gerund).

Examples:

  • I am going to the store.

Subject ("I") + be verb ("am") + verb-ing ("going") + object ("to the store").

  • She is reading a book.

Subject ("She") + be verb ("is") + verb-ing ("reading") + object ("a book").

Using the Present Continuous Tense for Future Plans

To talk about future plans or intentions, we use the present continuous tense. This shows what we have decided to do or what we intend to do in the future. It's a way to talk about our scheduled activities or arrangements.

Examples:

  • I am meeting my friend tomorrow.

Shows future plan. Subject ("I") + be verb ("am") + verb-ing ("meeting") + time expression ("tomorrow").

  • We are visiting our grandparents next weekend.

Indicates future intention. Subject ("We") + be verb ("are") + verb-ing ("visiting") + time expression ("next weekend").

When you want to express what you're planning to do, remember to use the present continuous tense. This helps make your intentions clear and tells others about your future activities.
