  • When we say "on Monday" or "on Sunday", it refers to the next such day from the day of speech.
  • When we say "on Mondays" or "on Fridays", it means every Monday or every Friday respectively.
  • Saturday and Sunday are usually days off for most people and are known as the weekend.

Let's talk about days of the week. Days of the week are very important for scheduling, making plans, and knowing when things happen. In English, there are seven days in a week. These are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Let's look at each one in detail.

Weekdays in a calendar

Monday

Monday is the first day of the work week in most western countries. It comes after Sunday and before Tuesday.

We put the preposition "on" before a weekday in a sentence.

Examples:

  • I have a meeting on Monday.

"on" = preposition. "Monday" = "weekday, object of the preposition".

  • My next soccer game is on Monday.

"on" = preposition. "Monday" = "weekday, object of the preposition".

If you want to talk about Monday next week, say "next Monday". Don't put any prepositions before "next".

Examples:

  • There is a soccer game next Monday.

  • I have an appointment next Monday.

Tuesday

Tuesday comes after Monday. This is the 2nd day of the week.

Wednesday

Wednesday comes after Tuesday. This is the 3rd day of the week.

Thursday

Thursday comes after Wednesday. This is the 4th day of the week.

Friday

Friday comes after Thursday. This is the 5th day of the week.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday and Sunday are the "weekend". They are days off for most people. Saturday comes after Friday and is the 6th day of the week. Sunday is after Saturday and is the 7th day of the week.

Combining weekdays and dates

We put the weekday before the date.

Examples:

  • Today is Tuesday, October 2nd.

"Tuesday" is the weekday. "October 2nd" is the date.

  • The test is on Thursday, January 10th.

"on" = preposition. "Thursday" = "weekday". "January 10th" = the date.
