Common Pronouns in English
- Pronouns replace nouns in sentences to avoid repetition.
- Subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they) are used as the subject of a sentence.
- Object pronouns (me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them) are used as the object of a sentence.
In English, we use pronouns to avoid repeating the same nouns. If we constantly repeated a person's name or a specific thing, the sentence would be tedious and confusing. There are many kinds of pronouns, but let's focus on two basic types: subject pronouns and object pronouns.
Subject Pronouns
Subject pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence. The subject is the person or thing doing the action. Here are the subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they.
Examples:
-
I love pizza.
Here, 'I' is the subject pronoun.
-
They play soccer every weekend.
In this case, 'They' is the subject pronoun performing the action.
Object Pronouns
Object pronouns, on the other hand, are used as the object of a sentence. The object is the person or thing receiving the action. The object pronouns are: me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them.
Examples:
-
She likes him.
In this sentence, 'him' is the object pronoun receiving the action.
-
You are helping us.
Here, 'us' is the object pronoun.
Once you've mastered these basic pronouns, you've taken a big step forward in improving your English! Keep practicing and soon you'll get the hang of it.
