A preposition of irection (Preposition of Movement) describes the direction in which something or someone is moving. In English, prepositions of direction include 'to', 'into', 'towards', 'through', 'across', 'down', 'up', and 'over'.

Important Prepositions of Direction

The preposition 'to' shows the movement from one place to another. It's normally used with verbs that show movement like 'go', 'walk', 'drive', 'move' etc.

Examples:

  • I am walking to the park.

  • She is driving to the supermarket.

The preposition 'into' is for going inside something.

Examples:

  • He jumped into the pool.

  • She ran into the house.

'Towards' means in the direction of. The movement isn’t necessarily completed.

Examples:

  • He is walking towards the car.

  • They are moving towards the door.

The preposition 'through' is for the movement from one end or side of something to the other.

Examples:

  • The bird flew through the window.

  • She walked through the park.
